The Shiva Samhita
The Shiva Samhita is an anonymous text written somewhere between the 15th and 17th century. Its content deals specifically with hatha yoga. According to tradition it is a discourse given by Shiva to his spiritual partner Parvati. (Samhita = partner, companion). In Chapter three the qualities necessary to succeed in yoga are discussed.
The first quality needed for success in yoga is an understanding that ones efforts on the path will bear fruit.
The second quality needed for success is being firm in that understanding.
The third quality needed is respect and faith in ones teacher.
The fourth quality needed is equanimity. (samata bhava)
The fifth quality needed is control over the senses.
The sixth quality needed is moderate eating habits.
There is no seventh quality.
