Seven Deadly Sins
The evolution of the seven deadly sins.
A list of vices was put forth by Evagrius Ponticus (345 – 399) who was probably drawing on an earlier list of Origen Adamantius’s (182 – 254). These are:
Grosser/ Materialistic
1. Gluttony
2. Lust
3. Avarice
Inward Temptations
4. Dejection
5. Anger
6. Despondency
Subtle Spiritual Vices
7. Vainglory
8. Pride
This list was adapted by St. Gregory the Great (590 – 604) who omitted dejection claiming that it was the same thing as despondency. He also omitted pride and added envy sealing into history what became known as the “Seven Deadly Sins”.
1. Vainglory (inanis gloria)

3. Anger (ira)
4. Dejection (tristia)
5. Avarice (avarita)
